Ryan Spikes, RN, BSN
Founder & Wellness Director
I became a registered nurse in 2007 because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. Over the years, I cared for patients in medical-surgical nursing, oncology, home health, and hospice, walking alongside individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult and vulnerable moments. Those experiences taught me that great nursing is about more than treating disease—it’s about educating, empowering, and caring for the whole person.
After several years at the bedside, I spent a decade working on the business and technology side of healthcare. When I returned to direct patient care, I saw the healthcare landscape through new eyes.
Patients were sicker than ever. Cancer diagnoses had become increasingly common. More people were living with multiple chronic illnesses and complex medical conditions, resulting in frequent hospitalizations and overwhelming medication regimens. But what stood out most wasn’t just the decline in health, it was how our healthcare system had evolved.
Stepping away from bedside nursing gave me the perspective to recognize what many of us experience but rarely say out loud: our healthcare system has become largely focused on managing illness rather than creating health. Too often, success is measured by treating disease after it develops instead of helping people prevent it in the first place. The system excels at responding to sickness, but many patients are left without the education, guidance, and personalized support they need to truly thrive.
That’s why I founded Emerald Care Concierge Nursing.
